Online Piano Lessons vs. In-Person Lessons

Online Piano lessons vs. In-person lessons? Covid hits in other parts of the country. Everyone was left to wonder how far and to what part of the country it would reach. Don’t need to give you the details because we all lived it. So, shutting down as a self-employed/gig economy earner was a little difficult as it was for a lot of small businesses. Trying to figure out a way to still function in a situation no one was prepared for. I was already familiar with zoom and immediately began to teach online piano lessons on zoom for 10 minutes with the intention of keeping my students up to speed, so I was mainly reviewing material. There was no fee for these lessons because I didn’t know just how to go about lessons on zoom or if it would even work. Four months into teaching on zoom, just doing a lot of trial and error, I had a system and a process in place that was working. I started to do 3o minute lessons and charging again and was referred a few students. Seeing the new students progressing that started out on zoom was a big boost in letting me know teaching lessons online would work and the students could still learn.

What’s better, zoom piano lessons or in person piano lessons?                                                                          I must admit, as a teacher I find the zoom lessons to be better in terms of the parent’s ability to be involved. The parents are in ear shot of the lessons and the instruction making student accountability present. For this reason, I’m seeing more progress at faster paces. Every teacher I’m assuming has experienced the student telling mom and dad that the teacher is not teaching me anything. The parent comes in and watch the student play song after song and says to me “they don’t play nothing at home.” I’ve been through that a few times, but no more because again, they are in ear shot of the lessons rather than dropping the student off and leave. I have also seen fewer cancellations, more reschedules because no one must come out the house to bring the students to lessons.  Which is nice because there really is no need for cancelation fees, something I never really stood firm on anyway. Living in Michigan piano lessons can be difficult in the winter months on but the teacher and the students. The snow plays a big part in the ability to teach during the winter months. You sometimes must plow and dash through the snow and cold, something that is not an issue with zoom.

Yes, I prefer it, though I could be bias! But I genuinely feel zoom lessons are better and more effective, but I also know different strokes for different folks and when things are safe to resume in person lessons again, there will be some students and parents who will prefer in person piano lessons better.

So, the question of which one is better, in person or zoom piano lessons is as everything an individual choice, as a piano instructor, I must navigate the new normal and be flexible to both!
