How long will it take my child to learn to play the piano? The most popular question I get from parents is, how long to learn piano? And my answer is the only one I can provide, it varies, it depends on how much time the student put into practice, and the fact that everybody learns differently and at different paces. I teach students that seems to never practice but are naturally gifted in music and pick it up quickly and easy. Then I have students that must practice and work at Music to gain an understanding and learn the language of music and apply it. Then I have the student that doesn’t practice, and the language of music does not come easy and therefore it is a struggle for the student, which should be obvious from the lack of practice. I try to encourage parents to be involved with the students learning. Have a dedicated practice schedule for the student to stick to. I recommend at the minimum 20 minutes, five days a week. Having a practice program outlined by the instructor and followed by the student will yield the best results in taking piano lessons and learning to play the piano.

To provide an estimated time frame of achieving desired level of piano playing, according to pianoground.com

  • Learning one simple kids’ song by rote (teacher plays student mimics): 1-4 weeks
  • Learning one simple pop/folk song by rote: 1-2 months
  • Play basic piano: (sight reading, music theory) 5-10 years
  • Play advanced piano: 10-15 years

The level that you want to be able to play the piano at, has a direct relation to how much time you practice, student motivation, individual learning pace and the instructor. As the student progress through the different lessons and receive certificates of completion for each level of piano lessons reached, the student, the parents, and the instructor will see the fruits of their labor.
